Trikatu means the Three Pungents and it is used to help maintain a healthy respiratory system. Ginger, Black Pepper and Long Pepper are mixed together to stimulate the system, warm the digestion and improve assimilation of nutrients. It is traditionally used for lung and nasal problems. It is specific for allergic rhinitis, hayfever and colds. It is used in Ayurveda as part of a weight loss regime to increase metabolism, digest fats and balance appetite.
It is traditionally taken with honey. Use before meals as a deepaniya- a digestive stimulant and after meals as a pachaniya- as an aid to digestion. This is the main stimulant compound used in Ayurveda. Trikatu rejuvenates Agni, burns away Ama and allows for the assimilation of other medicines and foods. Ginger, Black Pepper and Long Pepper Ayurvedic Energetics: Specific for low Agni and high Ama, weak digestive fire and accumulation of toxins; reduces Kapha and Vata, increases Pitta. Trikatu is used mainly to control conditions in which kapha or ama obstructs Vata.
